Basque has no known Linguistic Relatives

I have always been interested in languages and linguistics – and this includes etymology and language families. I recently came across this articles that deals with Euskara, also known as Basque. I found it interesting and I thought I would share.

Here is a summary of the article:

Basque, or Euskara, is a language isolate with no known relatives. It is spoken in a region spanning northeastern Spain and southwestern France. Thought to have originated in the Neolithic period, it survived the spread of Indo-European languages. Today, it exists in several dialects, though most speakers use a standardized form developed in the 1960s. About 35% of the Basque population speaks it. (700,000 Basque speakers) While some linguists believe it may be the last survivor of a broader Vasconic language family, the theory remains debated.
